The ultimate women's gilet guide

The ultimate women's gilet guide

Whether you're off on a long countryside walk, heading to the pub with the girls, of just want something that looks effortlessly put-together (and keeps you warm), we've got you covered with our collection of vests and gilets.

In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about women's gilets - which styles are best suited to a particular season, qualities in a good gilet and how to style a gilet.

What is a gilet?

A gilet (pronounced jee-lay) is a sleeveless jacket that's designed to add warmth without restricting your arms or as a lightweight layer for outdoor activates. Sometimes called a bodywarmer, the gilet come in different styles and materials - from quilted, puffers, or fleece-lined - depending on the season.

The gilet is often a practical layering piece, perfect for those in-between days when a coat is too much and a jumper isn't quite enough.

Why would you wear a gilet?

Gilets are incredibly versatile. Here's why they've become a staple in so many wardrobes:

  • Perfect for layering - throw over a jumper, hoodie, shirt or t-shirt
  • Warmth without the bulk - keeps your core warm while letting your arms move freely
  • All year round - ideal in autumn and spring, and great under a coat for extra warmth in winter
  • Effortless style - from country chic to urban casual, a gilet can transform an outfit

What makes a good gilet?

Not all gilets are created equal, we handpick styles that come with a range of features, from breathable, moisture-wicking material with water-repellent properties, to comfortable stretch softshell that provide excellent freedom of movement but a close fit.

Here's what we look for to in a gilet to ensure you are comfortable and stylish for every occasion:

  • Fit and cut - the best gilets are shaped to flatter your body without feeling tight. Look for slightly tailored sides if you want a more feminine fit
  • Materials and insulation - depending on the season, choose from;
    • Lightweight quilted - great for spring/autumn walks
    • Down or synthetic puffers - ideal for colder days
    • Fleece-lined - cosy and casual, great for layering on chilly days
    • Tweed - ideal for any shooting occasion
  • Pockets - good gilets come large useful pockets
  • Collar height and fastening - a high collar adds warmth on windy days, while a two-way zip make the gilet more comfortable and accessible

How should a gilet fit?

Finding the right fit is key when wearing gilets and vests. The garment should skim the body with the armholes not restricting movement, a fit that it closer to the body will avoid a baggy look and will ensure warmth and comfort by keeping draughts out.

An important aspect of the gilet fit is ensuring the garment isn't tight and restrictive when moving, it needs to allow for freedom of movement. The gilet should also zip up easily, if the garment is pulling across your chest, or riding up, size up.

How to style a women's gilet

The gilet is such a versatile piece, with endless ways to style in a wide range of situations. Here's our top tips on how to wear a gilet and what to pair it with.

Base layer

Pair with a long-sleeved base layer to keep you warm in the winter months. Our Ginger & Jardine roll necks create a sophisticated base layer, while a polo shirt creates a casual look.

Mid-layer

The Seeland Emily Fleece makes the perfect mid-layer pairing, providing further insulation and keeping you warm throughout the day.

Outerwear

A coat or jacket, that's either waterproof or water-repellent and breathable, to protect you from the elements.

Is the gilet worth it?

Absolutely! A gilet is one of the most wearable, transitional pieces you can own. It's a smart investment that works hard in your wardrobe - whether you're heading outdoors, running errands, or just want to feel put-together without trying too hard.
