Wet weather heroes

Wet weather heroes

Ever been caught in a downpour, only to find that your ‘waterproof’ jacket isn’t quite living up to its potential? Understanding which waterproof gear best suits your needs can save you from soggy uncomfortable situations.

As someone who has spent years outdoors in the field and countryside, I understand the importance of reliable waterproof clothing. That’s why I’ve handpicked my top choices for keeping you dry and comfortable, whatever the weather.

But first, let’s clear up the difference between waterproof and water-resistant clothing. It may sound like a small distinction, but trust me, it can make or break your experience when the weather turns.

Let’s start with water-resistant clothing. These garments are treated with a special coating to repel water. They’re great for light rain, drizzle—situations where you’re likely to face short bursts of moisture. Think of water-resistant items as your first line of defence; they’re best for keeping you dry when the weather is wet but not too severe. For instance, a water-resistant jacket will help fend off light rain, but if you’re caught in a downpour for hours, you’ll start to feel the water seeping through.

Now, waterproof clothing is in a different league. It’s designed to keep you completely dry, no matter how bad the weather gets. Waterproof materials are not just treated with a coating—they’re often made with laminated membranes that completely block water from penetrating, even in heavy rain or wet environments. However, by virtue of the multiple membranes and increased coating, the decreased breathability can cause overheating and a clammy feeling, especially during warmer weather.

Waterproof jackets

Harkila Orton tech HWS jacket, £269.99

The Harkila Orton Tech HWS is a lightweight jacket designed to handle hard weather whilst providing ample room for movement and features a stow away hood and quick load pockets.

The jacket fits true to size, is great with just a shirt for those rainy warmer days and there’s still room for a jumper and bodywarmer underneath without restrictive movement.

Fortis Field Jacket, £299

The Fortis Field Jacket is thicker than the Harkila Orton Tech HWS Jacket and is considered a mediumweight. Features include a long back for better protection, a fitted design with scoop back and waterproof chest pockets to keep your items dry.

Like the Harkila, it’s true to size and leaves room for layers.

Water-resistant middle layer

Baleno Women's Southwell Wind & Showerproof Fleece Navy, £99.95

The Baleno Southwell fleece is windproof and showerproof, perfect for those fresh mornings with light drizzle. It’s versatile enough to wear as a top layer or as a mid-layer under a winter jacket. It fits true to size with a shirt, though I’d recommend sizing up if you plan to layer it over a jumper.

Waterproof trousers

Seeland Woodcock Advance Trouser, £126.95

The Seeland Woodcock Advance Trouser is tailored for women and are made with 4-way stretch material for freedom of movement and are waterproof and windproof – making them ideal for all fieldsport activities, from shooting to beating.
True to size, though if you like wearing thermals underneath, consider sizing up. They run long, so if you’re under 5’3, tailoring might be necessary.

Water-resistant trousers

Harkila Retrieve Light Trousers, £152.99

The Harkila Retrieve Light Trousers are dirt and water-repellent and made from a stretch material making them ideal for all fieldsports where the weather is warmer.
They fit true to size, but again, if you prefer layering, size up.

Waterproof socks

Sealskinz Raynham Waterproof All Weather Mid Length Sock, £38.00

The SealSkinz Rayham socks offer excellent protection with their three-layer construction, keeping you dry and warm in rain, snow, or mud. Perfect for beating, stream crossings, or wearing with leaky waders, these socks are breathable and durable in any wet condition.

Waterproof gloves

Sealskinz Broome Waterproof All Weather Shooting Glove, £59.95 GBP

The Sealskinz Waterproof All Weather Shooting gloves are rugged and technical, offering 100% waterproof protection with breathability. They’re perfect for all weather shooting when you need warmth and dexterity without sacrificing comfort in wet weather.
