Shotgun certificate application

Step by Step Firearm licensing process

Navigating the firearm licensing process in the UK involves several actionable steps, each with its own requirements and considerations.

We've collaborated with Firearms Med to provide a breakdown of the process along with tips and best practices for applicants:

Step 1: Determine eligibility and reason for ownership
The police want to see that you need your rifle or firearm on a regular basis, so before starting the application process carefully consider your eligibility and the reason for wanting to own a firearm. Ensure that you meet the legal requirements and have a legitimate reason such as for work, sport or leisure.

Tip: If you're planning on booking deerstalking, contact the professional stalkers you are planning to shoot with who will vouch for you. Even if you plan to shoot once or twice a year, this will be sufficient to show good reason for having a firearms certificate.

Step 2: Gather necessary documentation
Gather all required documentation:

  • Proof of identity
    • This can include driving licence or passport
  • Proof of address
  • One passport size photograph
  • References who will act as referees for you
    • Every applicant for a firearms certificate is required to nominate two referees (one for a shotgun certificate)
    • The licensing authorities will contact them independently so all you need to do is get their agreement before nominating them
  • Relevant certifications or qualifications related to firearms use (where applicable)
Step 3: Complete application form

Obtain the firearm or shotgun application form from your local police force's firearms licensing department, here's a list of the police forces in the UK.

Fill out the form accurately and truthfully, providing all required information and supporting documentation, and send the form to your GP.

Alternatively, there are websites that facilitate medical reports to the citizens who apply for a new firearms licence or going for its renewal.

Step 4: Undergo background checks and medical assessment
Be prepared to undergo thorough background checks, including criminal records and mental health checks. Provide accurate information and be honest during the process.

Step 5: Arrange for secure storage
Ensure that you have secure storage facilities in place for the firearms, such as an approved gun cabinet or safe. Make sure the storage meets the required standards set by the police.

Tip: The firearms security handbook provides guidance on storing and transporting firearms. Your gun cabinet should conform to BS7558.

Step 6: Attend interview (if required)
If requested, attend an interview with the police to discuss your application and reasons for firearm ownership. Be prepared to answer questions about your intentions and demonstrate your knowledge of firearm safety and regulations.

Step 7: Wait for the decision
After submitting your application, wait for the police to review and make a decision. The process may take several weeks or months, so be patient and follow up with the licensing department if necessary.

Step 8: Comply with additional requirements
If additional requirements or conditions are imposed on your license, such as training or regular reviews, ensure that you comply with them to maintain your license.

Step 9: Renew license as necessary
Keep track of your license expiration date, firearm or shotgun certificate typically last for five years from the date it is issued or renewed. Initiate the renewal process 20-24 weeks before the expiry date to avoid any disruptions in your firearm ownership.

Step 10: Maintain compliance with regulations
Once you obtain your firearm license, ensure that you comply with all relevant regulations, including storage requirements, usage restrictions, and reporting obligations.

Stay informed about any changes to the law that may affect your license.

Additional tips and best practices

  • Be patient: The process can be lengthy, so remain patient and be prepared for delays.
  • Seek guidance: If you're unsure about any aspect of the process, seek guidance from your local police force or firearm licensing department.
  • Stay informed: Keep yourself informed about firearm laws and regulations to ensure compliance and responsible ownership.
  • Safety first: Prioritise safety at all times and adhere to best practices for handling and storing firearms.

By following these actionable steps and best practices, applicants can navigate the firearm licensing process effectively and responsibly.

Remember that firearm ownership is a serious responsibility, and adherence to regulations is crucial for public safety and responsible ownership.
